BC Jags Skinner; NITFEVER: UNC in Final Four…of NIT vs. Rhode Island

If you’re not in the know, BC head coach Al Skinner was fired. I don’t know enough to give a in-depth comment, but BC sure is curious with their hire/fires. Just weird.

This guy has NIT fever.

This guy has NIT fever.

I pledged on Twitter that I’d do an NIT preview if they made it to MSG–and here we are. UNC made a Final Four they weren’t expecting to make pre-season, and here’s how it goes down…

Predicting the NIT is a crap-shoot. You have motivation issues, especially under the bright lights of NYC. Who’s going to be happy to be there or who’s there to win it all? UNC, with all of its seniors, seems like a team that will be in category two. We’ll start the preview with a case study of how these teams did in the rough environment of the Cassell.

Here’s how the Rhode Island Rams did against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg…

(H/T UNC and Rhode Island official sites for box score)
  • First off, Rhode Island won and the Heels lost. The Heels leading scorer from that loss is gone in Ed Davis, but Tyler Zeller is back–not a complete wash, but little edge taken off there..
  • Neither team played much defense–UNC had 11 more rebounds in their loss which curious.
  • UNC’s 19 turnovers is troublesome.
  • Verdict: Rhode Island is better based off this case study.

  • Interestingly enough, UNC amassed the same amount of rebounds as the VT game so they’ve found a way to re-distribute the rebounds post-Davis.
  • UNC only had 3 turnovers, which means after only scoring 60–they missed a bunch of shots.
  • The defense improved immensely between the games as UAB shot 15 for 52.
  • A mix of youth and experience is doing the scoring as Deon Thompson shared the leading scorer category with John Henson–Larry Drew put a solid 11 points and 6 assists.
  • Overall, UNC’s NIT run has been impressive with a win over a feisty Bill/Mary in Carmichael, road win at Mississippi State, and at UAB–they are playing like a much better team than they did in the regular season and will butt heads with another impressive NIT team in the first round.

OTB’s Pick: Heels 66-64

The Tar Heels have played a number of games in environments like MSG where Rhode Island will be soaking up the atmosphere early–UNC will play loose and pull out a close one with similar performances to their other NIT victories–with youth and experience leading the way.

Does UNC pull it out? Do you care?
