Welcome to your weekly ACC Football Mid-Week Hype Machine that hopefully bridges your week to the weekend with good reads…
- 09/02/10 Presbyterian Blue Hose @ Wake Forest / ESPN3 / 6:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: New QB Ted Stachitas vs. nerves
Presbyterian was a good D-II program a few years ago, but not so much on the FCS level yet – Stachitas only has to battle nerves in this one on his first day on the job in Winston-Salem Thursday.
Watch This Over…: Your local news, because when’s the last time you really watched the local news at 6? Just pull it up online after the game.
- Florida A&M Rattlers @ Miami Hurricanes / ESPN3 / 7:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Miami offense vs. the scoreboard
Can the scoreboard keep up against a team ready to post a number? We shall see.
Bringing The Noise: Eye of the Hurricane previews the game. Miami Herald goes over the injury list/depth chart going into the FAMU game. Harris has a variety of deadly weapons at receiver. Canes might work in some playing time for a much-hyped recruit. Graig Cooper will play Thursday after the knee injury sustained in the Champ Sports Bowl.
Watch This Over…: Deal or No Deal, because it’s a replay of a game show (I think…they cancelled that awhile ago, right? I think Mandel’s on his 3rd show since).
- 09/04/10 Samford Bulldogs @ Florida State Seminoles / ESPNU / 12:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: FSU passing attack vs. an experienced FCS D
The ‘Noles should roll, but Samford isn’t a dog FCS team so they could present some challenge to an offense trying to gel.
Watch This Over…: Western Michigan at Michigan State, it’s the opening of the Jimbo Fisher era.
- Weber State Wildcats @ Boston College Eagles / ESPN3 / 1:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: BC QB vs. BC receivers
Weber State is a middle of the pack team in the Big Sky so this one will be all about finding the right combo at QB and receiver for BC.
Bringing The Noise: BC’s not afraid to go to youth on the depth chart. Soaring to Glory breaks down the offenses. Herzlich should make it on the field Saturday, but BC/Weber State might have some weather issues.
Watch This Over…: Bizarre Foods, I get it already – people eat weird stuff – you get paid money to eat that – cameras roll – I’m gonna watch football.
- SC State Bulldogs @ Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets / ESPN3 / 1:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: GT’s new 3-4 scheme vs. a decent FCS offense
SC State is a preseason favorite in the MEAC and atop the SBN FCS poll – if GT’s D isn’t in step yet, the Bulldogs can put up some points on them.
Watch This Over…: Miami (OH) vs. Florida, so, instead of the “U” – UF schedule the one from Ohio? Pass.
- North Texas Mean Green @ Clemson Tigers / ESPNU / 3:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Mean Green rushing O vs. Clemson rushing D
North Texas had the 28th ranked rushing offense behind Lance Dunbar – Clemson’s rushing defense struggled big time down the stretch in 2009 and finished 67th.
Bringing The Noise: OrangeandWhite.com outlines the way Clemson can win and lose Saturday. Shakin the Southland blows your mind with football talk, specifically how Clemson can attack with the nickel package. Might get tough to attack in this one without Brandon Maye at WLB.
Watch This Over…: Wizards of Waverly Place, because this episode seems totally lame – apparently Alex goes on a bad date and somebody has a science project.
- Western Carolina Catamounts @ NC State Wolfpack / ESPN3 / 6:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: NC State football team vs. health
The Wolfpack can’t seem to stay healthy, and coming out of a blowout victory as this should be is at a premium.
Watch This Over…: Star Wars II, as they were just not the same of the trilogy – watch Russell Wilson and be entertained.
- Richmond Spiders @ Virginia Cavaliers / ESPN3 / 6:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Virginia O vs. Richmond D
Familiar name at QB with Verica and a couple top receivers are back, but they face a team that had a top-flight D in the FCS last year.
Bringing The Noise: Despite familiarity, Daily Progress outlines the unknowns between these squads. They also break down the depth chart here. From Old Virginia details the defense coming into 2010 here. Virginia Raycom Blog has the lowdown on the UVa QB situation.
Watch This Over…: Locked Up Abroad, hey, you’re in the middle of your CFB day – watch master vs. padawan (last capsule carrying over apparently) over a show about foreign prisons.
- Elon Phoenix @ Duke Blue Devils / ESPN3 / 7:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Duke vs. 2010 FCS team
The Blue Devils defeated 5 FBS squads (including 3 ACC squads) in 2009 – but lost to Virginia’s new coach at Richmond – Elon is a decent FCS squad, the Blue Devils will be on notice in 2010.
Watch This Over…: CFB Scoreboard, highlights or DUKE FOOTBALL – you know what to choose.
- LSU Tigers @ North Carolina Tar Heels / ABC / 8:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: UNC’s Yates vs. LSU Secondary
Yates connected more with the opposing D than his own in the endzone in 2009 – LSU’s secondary has a quality corner in Patrick Peterson off a squad that finished 19th in pass efficiency and 29th in pass defense overall.
Bringing The Noise: Davis struggled to get away from investigation talk at his presser, but when he did, he elaborated. We all know how good the first team UNC D is, but in light of recent issues, the depth isn’t quite there in experience. Carolina March takes a break from the investigation issues to look at the offense.
Watch This Over…: Jerry Maguire, I would like to point out what I just did there – movie about agents, UNC football, okay I’m done.
- 09/06/10 Navy Midshipmen @ Maryland Terrapins / ESPN / 4:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Navy QB Ricky Dobbs vs. Maryland D
The Terps have been practicing without the ball against the Navy triple option attack that Dobbs leads – we’ll see if it works.
Watch This Over…: Remember the Titans, big fan of this movie, but the Terps go for their first win since early October of 2009.
- Boise State Broncos @ Virginia Tech Hokies / ESPN / 8:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Boise’s Peterson vs. Virginia Tech’s Beamer
They are two of the best coaches in the game – the cards up the sleeve of each will decide the direction of this one.
Bringing The Noise: Kyle Tucker delves into Boise’s record in situations like the Labor Day matchup vs. the Hokies. Virginia Tech will be terrifying defenses with three really talented backs now. Norm Wood covers the kicking situation in this one. Gobbler Country has the need-to-know on Broncos-Hokies. Coach Beamer thrilled to have Taylor at QB.
Watch This Over…: The O’Reilly Factor (and everything else), put aside the politics for one night to watch a great game in the nation’s capital.
Thanks for reading and come on back for the Thursday Pick’Em Post!
