Welcome to your weekly ACC Midweek Links that hopefully bridges your week to the weekend with good reads…
- 09/10/10 Rutgers Scarlet Knights @ North Carolina Tar Heels / ACC Network / 12:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: UNC RBs vs. Rutgers’ rush defense
Sure, it was NC Central, but the Scarlet Knights allowed all of eight rushing yards last week. Bryn Renner should have another good day here so a strong Heels’ rushing attack will help UNC run away with this one.
Quotable Coach (Everett Withers): On the loss of FB Devon Ramsay – “Offensively I feel like we use a number of different personnel groups and formations that allows us to look like we have two backs in the backfield. So I think we’ll be fine. We feel like Curtis *Byrd+ will be good for us in that role. But we feel like we can get done what we need to get done offensively and still be able to do the things we do with the personnel groups we use.”
Watch This Over…: Central Michigan at Kentucky (ESPNU), see Kentucky/Western Kentucky (wear protective covering for eyes).
- Virginia Tech Hokies @ East Carolina Pirates / FSN / 3:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Hokies’ offense vs. the scoreboard
It’s road game one for Logan Thomas and co., but the Hokies put up 66 points and ECU gave up 56 last week.
Quotable Coach (Frank Beamer): On Logan Thomas in road environment: “Yea, that will be an emotional place down there. But I think our guys and Logan included like to play in places where they are excited about you being there. So I think that says something about your program and I think Logan will handle it as well as he can. He’s a smart guy and he knows what’s going on and he’s working hard to get a little bit better everyday. I think he understands, like the rest of us, that it’s going to be loud and that he needs go forward each snap.”
Watch This Over…: LPGA Tour Golf (Golf), it’s the NW Arkansas Chamionship – I think you can skip it.
- NC State Wolfpack @ Wake Forest Demon Deacons/ RSN / 3:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Wake’s Tanner Price vs. Pack secondary
When he was healthy (something very much in question for this one), Price lit up the Syracuse secondary. NC State didn’t exactly shut down the passing attack of Liberty last week, finishing 93rd in the nation in pass defense after week one.
Quotable Coach (Tom O’Brien): On the early ACC game – “I’d like to be like the Big 10 and play your four non-conference games and then go into conference, but this is the way the schedule breaks so this is how we have to do it, and for the fifth time go on the road for an opener.”
Quotable Coach (Jim Grobe): On Tanner Price’s health – “He has practiced, and I think he’s going to be fine by Saturday. I think we’re very fortunate that he wasn’t hurt worse than he was. I think it may have scared him a little bit more than it hurt him. I think he was really concerned because he’s had an ACL (tear) before, but he seems to be doing fine right now, and hopefully by Saturday he’ll be full speed and ready to roll.”
Watch This Over…: Nevada at Oregon (FX), NC State/Wake has the potential to be a pretty good game – Oregon should roll.
- Stanford Cardinal @ Duke Blue Devils / ESPNU / 3:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Blue Devils vs. keeping loss under 49 points
Alabama came into Wallace Wade and won 62-13 last season, and after last week, Stanford doing such a thing is not out of the question.
Quotable Coach (David Cutcliffe): On Andrew luck – “People ask me why is he good? I’ll tell you why he’s so good. He’s some sort of physical specimen. You’re going to be surprised with how big he is. He’s a big strong athlete. He’s got great feet and great quick hands. He has a very uncanny sense of poise and ability to buy a little time. He just stands out of the pack. He’s a great football player to watch. He is surrounded by a good supporting cast; good tight ends, good receivers, outstanding running backs and an outstanding offense.”
Bringing The Noise: Duke braces for Andrew Luck and Stanford. Blue Devil RBs day-to-day. Duke Sports Blog moves on from Richmond to talk Stanford. I’m not exactly sure what all this is, but it has Kyle Chandler as a possible replacement for Cutcliffe. But seriously, some folks want to fire Cutcliffe and here’s why you shouldn’t.
Watch This Over…: Fred: The Movie (Nick), Duke fans may just want to skip to next week with the trip to Boston College.
- Wofford Terriers @ Clemson Tigers / ESPN3/ 3:30 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Tiger freshmen vs. week two against FCS team
The 12 Clemson true freshmen that saw the field (and excelled) against Troy got their first taste of the media spotlight this week. Will be interesting to see how these guys play after the publicity.
Quotable Coach (Dabo Swinney): On Wofford – “They have Georgia Tech, Auburn, a little of everything. They’re a very diverse offense. They must do a great job of teaching to be able to teach all the things they do. They have some Georgia Tech principles, but they have a lot more things they’ll do from a personnel standpoint.”
Bringing The Noise: Clemson will be missing starting FS Rashard Hall, but they have options. It hasn’t taken long for freshman LB Stephone Anthony to turn heads on Clemson’s defense. OrangeandWhite.com scouts Wofford with how the Terriers pull off the upset, who to watch on Wofford and what Clemson must do to win with ease.
Watch This Over…: The Jacksons: An American Dream (VH1), just a few things have happened since 1992 when the doc was made.
- Charleston Southern Buccaneers @ Florida State Seminoles/ ESPN3 / 6:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: FSU offense vs. getting in gear
Charleston Southern is not a very good team, but this is a big tune-up going into the primetime matchup hosting Oklahoma next week.
Quotable Coach (Jimbo Fisher): On nerves for E.J. Manuel – “I think it’s great. If you don’t have butterflies, why are you playing? I told them I had butterflies for 22 years for every game I’m in. Once I lose them, I’ll quit. But if he’s nervous every week and he throws 65 percent every week, we’ll be pretty good.”
Bringing The Noise: The Chopping Block has your need to know on the Bucs. Sports Network previews the matchup. Greg Reid and Telvin Smith are suspended for this one. FSU WR Willie Haulstead is back and expected to start this week. In games like this, the final score and stats aren’t all that important.
Watch This Over…: Too Cute! Kittens (Animal Planet), at least it’s not Hillbilly Handfishin’.
- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders / ESPN3 / 7:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. road ambush
Maryland lost at Middle Tennessee not long ago, and the Blue Raiders led into the final minute at Purdue last week, before a 35-yard TD pass with 49 seconds to go by the Boilermakers.
Quotable Coach (Paul Johnson): On fumble-troubles – “You just keep working on it. It’s frustrating to everybody. It’s frustrating to me that you have quarterback-center exchange problems. We work on it everyday in practice and we continue to work on it and make it a big deal and hope those go away. A lot of its fundamental issues. Well not a lot of it, all of it is fundamental issues. Of course there’s always a story. The ball’s always slipping or something happened but it’s unacceptable. Can’t allow it.”
Watch This Over…: Race to Witch Mountain (Cartoon), it’s not a cartoon!
- Virginia Cavaliers @ Indiana Hoosiers / Big Ten Network / 7:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: Virginia rushing offense vs. Indiana D
Indiana allowed Ball State to run all over them in a 27-20 neutral loss at Lucas Oil Stadium – the ‘Hoos ran wild on William & Mary.
Quotable Coach (Mike London): On Indiana – “I don’t know if they’re on the Legends or Leaders side. But they’re big and they’re physical…Their offense is a little bit of a pistol offense with the back directly behind the quarterback. It’s a high-tempo offense where they don’t allow you to substitute, so they’ll get to the line of scrimmage quickly, check at the line, and call their plays. There’s a little bit of option aspects to what they do—some two-back schemes there. There’s some quarterback read plays.”
Watch This Over…: New Mexico at Arkansas (ESPNU), because no one should watch Lobos football…ever.
- Boston College Eagles @ UCF Golden Knights / CBS Sports Network / 8:00 p.m. ET
Must-See Matchup: UCF rushing offense vs. BC’s rush defense
Last season, the Eagles led the nation in rush defense – against Northwestern, 99th nationally (227 yards). UCF racked up 316 ground yards against Charleston Southern last week.
Quotable Coach (Frank Spaziani): On the o-line – “We had concerns about that. We’ve had concerns all preseason. I think I’ve been pretty consistent about that. We try to help ourselves in certain areas and maybe we could do a better job. We might need to do a couple of different things.”
to help ourselves, because we weren’t able to help ourselves as much as we needed to.
Bringing The Noise: UCF doesn’t have a history of winning against BCS schools. Montel Harris is day-to-day. Soaring to Glory breaks down the defenses and offenses. BC’s depth chart vs. UCF. Eagle in Atlanta shows a recent history of BC bounceback games.
Watch This Over…: Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (Spike), this is a big game for BC as they might not be able to get a postseason bid out of a 0-2 hole.
