Ranking the ACC through a month of basketball based on resume thus far…

Editor’s note: Yes, I’m using RPI – obviously not the be-all-end-all of measures, but it gives an idea of the resume thus far.

ACC Basketball Power Poll – 12/11 (Our Preseason Ranking)

1) Duke Blue Devils – 9-0 (2)

Top-50 RPI Wins: 5
Top-100 RPI Wins: 7 (Neutral site Ws over Kentucky, Minnesota, Louisville & Temple – beat Ohio State at home, 73-68).
101-199 RPI Losses: 0
Top-200+ RPI Losses: 0
Key Contributor Notes: Mason Plumlee is averaging a double-double (19.2 PPG/11.3 RPG), in a starting-five all averaging double-figures. Freshman guard Rasheed Suliamon has been particularly impressive (12.3 PPG).

2) Maryland Terrapins – 8-1 (6…pre-Dez Wells being approved)

Key Contributor Notes: The light bulb is has turned on for center Alex Len in year two, averaging 13.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game to lead the Terps. Transfer/surprise NCAA waiver’d Dez Wells ranks second in scoring on Maryland, at 12.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per.

3) Virginia Tech Hokies – 8-1 (10)

Top-100 RPI Wins: 2 (Both at home, 95-79 over Iowa and 81-71 over Oklahoma State).

Key Contributor Notes: Former VT assistant (and Clemson assistant for a week) James Johnson has turned his Hokies loose offensively, at 11th nationally in points per game, with guard Erick Green leading the show (24.4 PPG/5 APG). Fellow upperclassmen Jarell Eddie has upped his production as well, at 14.8 PPG/7.1 RPG.

Top-50 RPI Wins: 1 (Two top-50 losses, by 7 at Michigan and by 20 to Oklahoma State at a neutral site).

Key Contributor Notes: Preseason ACC Player of the Year C.J. Leslie is currently third on State in points (13.1) and second in rebounds a game (8.3), with fellow forward Richard Howell’s outstanding start (14.4 PPG/8.4 RPG). Frosh T.J. Warren is also making an impact (13.8 PPG).

Key Contributor Notes: Transfer Shane Larkin is lighting it up, scoring 16.3 points and dishing 3.7 assists per game, while senior Durand Scott is right there at 15 points per.

Key Contributor Notes: With guard Jontel Evans still working his way back from injury (limited playing time in the last couple games), juniors Joe Harris (14.8 PPG/4.3 RPG) and Akil Mitchell (13.4 PPG/9.2 RPG) have picked up the slack.

Top-50 RPI Wins: 0 (Two top-15 losses, 82-71 to Butler at a neutral site and 83-59 @ Indiana).

Key Contributor Notes: James Michael McAdoo leads a group of four scoring double-figures, at 15 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Top-100 RPI Wins: 1 (65-56 over St. Mary’s at a neutral site, while the other wins are all 200+ RPI).

Key Contributor Notes: Frosh Marcus Georges-Hunt is atop the Jackets in scoring (11.8 PPG), while senior guard Mfon Udofia is the only other player in double-figures (10 PPG). Eight players are averaging double-figure minutes for Georgia Tech.

9) Clemson Tigers – 5-3 (8)

Top-50 RPI Wins: 0 (Led at the half or in the second half on top-20 Arizona and Gonzaga, home and neutral site respectively – ended up losing by 10 per game).

Top-200+ RPI Losses: 1 (Oddly enough, Purdue, 73-61 at home).
Key Contributor Notes: Sophomore swing-man K.J. McDaniels made the biggest leap of a big ’11 recruiting class for the Tigers, averaging 12 points, 5 boards and leads the ACC in blocks at 2.5 per game. The lone upperclassmen, forwards Devin Booker and Milton Jennings, are also averaging double-figures and at least 5 rebounds per.

10) Florida State Seminoles – 5-4 (4)

Top-50 RPI Wins: 0 (Both at home, FSU lost 74-47 to Florida, currently No. 4 in RPI, and 77-68 to Minnesota, currently No. 11).
Top-100 RPI Wins: 2

Top-200+ RPI Losses: 2 (Both at home as well, 76-71 to South Alabama and 61-56 to Mercer).
Key Contributor Notes: While the ‘Noles have been up-and-down, Michael Snaer leads the way, at 14.2 points and hitting over 40 percent from 3.
