ACC Blogger Power Poll: Preseason

Jackets are no. 1 until the ACC proves otherwise.

First, we did a rundown of the ACC season – next, you got to know the ACC position by position. So, what now? ACC. Power. Poll. Let me give my yearly description/disclaimer setting up the weekly poll:

There are a multitude of factors that go into the rankings, but with a power poll, ‘what have you done for me lately’ is one of the bigger ones. Tradition and what happened last decade or even last season are thrown out and the best football teams that are playing this season are ranked highest.

With that said, preseason rankings do rely on previous effort along with who is coming back (and the schedule and…) so here’s how they will start out of the gates this season in my ACC Power Poll:

First, how our Ranking 2010 ACC Football Series turned out on the whole…

Teams QB RB WR/TE OL DL LB S K/P Cch AVG
BC 7 3 9 2 5 2 6 10 10 6
Clemson 6 4 10 3 2 11 2 9 6 5.9
Duke 9 12 4 8 8 12 10 4 4 7.9
FSU 2 9 7 1 9 7 9 8 8 6.7
GT 3 2 12 6 7 6 8 6 2 5.8
MD 11 6 8 9 12 3 11 5 11 8.4
Miami 4 5 1 7 3 4 3 1 9 4.1
UNC 8 8 5 5 1 1 1 2 5 4
NCSU 1 10 3 11 11 5 12 3 7 7
VT 5 1 2 4 6 9 7 11 1 5.1

WF 12 7 6 12 10 8 5 12 3 8.3

Rank….Team………………………….Last Years’ Record………(APR*)…..Proj. Record
*Average position ranking from the Ranking 2010 ACC Football series.
1)..Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets…………..11-3 (7-1)…..(5.8)..9-3(5-3 ACC)
Unless a team falls precipitously in the offseason – I’ll rank them no. 1 going into the season coming off an ACC title. There’s a decent chance the Jackets are just as good as ‘09, but might not quite see the same results in the record column.

2)….Virginia Tech Hokies…………………10-3 (6-2 ACC)…(5.1)..10-3(6-2 ACC)
The Hokies have momentum, and have a chance to vault on the national scene in game one versus Boise State. We are living in an alternate reality world from every other year ever with the Hokies as the offense is leading the train while the defense has question marks.

3)….Clemson Tigers………………9-5 (6-2 ACC)……….(5.9)……9-3 (6-2 ACC)
The Tigers got over the hump with an Atlantic title, but with Parker back at QB, the expectations aren’t lowering in Clemson for an ACC title.

4)….Florida State Seminoles………….7-6 (4-4 ACC)….(6.7)……9-3 (7-1 ACC)
Me and 78 media members at the ACC Football Kickoff picked the ‘Noles to win the Atlantic – can Ponder, Fisher and co. deliver? Pressure is on.

5)….Boston College Eagles………………….8-5 (5-3 ACC)….(6)..10-2 (6-2 ACC)

You can save the script year-to-year: ACC media/blogosphere picks the Eagles low – Eagles outperform low expectations – everybody looks stupid – cycle repeats next season. I’m bullish on BC with a double-digit win season, which may be enough to punch the ticket to Charlotte.

6)….Miami Hurricanes………………………9-4 (5-3 ACC)……(4.1)….8-4(5-3 ACC)
Like UNC in the spot following, now is the time for the ‘Canes – basically the entire offense and defense returning – if any year was Miami’s, it’s this one.

7)….North Carolina Tar Heels…………8-5 (4-4 ACC)….(4.4)…8-4(4-4 ACC)
How will the Heels play under NCAA investigation? They clearly have the talent across the board to win the ACC, but the question is whether they can keep it all together for an entire season.

8)….Duke Blue Devils…………………………5-7 (3-5 ACC)….(7.9)….4-8 (2-6 ACC)

After a 3-win ACC campaign in 2009 (most conference wins since 1999), Duke has made big strides from the beginning of the Cutcliffe era to now in recruiting and development – but a tough schedule may not show it this season.

9)….North Carolina State Wolfpack………..5-7 (2-6 ACC)….(7)…6-6 (2-6 ACC)
Hasn’t been the most promising offseason, but Wilson is back with a group of talented receivers – questions abound about the Pack defense.

10)….Wake Forest Demon Deacons…5-7 (3-5 ACC)…..(8.3)….3-9 (1-7 ACC)
Stop if you have heard something about Riley Skinner being go…Wake Forest presses on without the internet phenomenon with solid weapons for whoever grabs the QB job – defense has to sow up the interior line and strengthen their secondary coming into the season.

11)….Maryland Terrapins……………………2-10 (1-7 ACC)….(8.4)….5-7 (3-5 ACC)
Two and ten – ouch. Friedgen leads the troops from rock bottom into 2010 with a team that plays to his strengths on O and a group of players on D that have the potential to mold the Terps into a surprise team this season.

12)….Virginia Cavaliers…………………..3-9 (2-6 ACC)….(8.8)….4-8 (1-7 ACC)
With no more Groh to kick around, I have to fill this space with something about the Wahoos. (Thinking) (Pondering) Weeeeeell, new coach Mike London is changing D schemes to a four-man front – defense should be solid, but if Verica doesn’t improve at QB (8/23 for 83 yards with 2 INTs in the spring game), it’s going to be a long season in Charlottesville.

Taking out all other factors, ACC divisions by the average position ranking:

Atlantic

1) Clemson – 5.9
2) BC – 6
3) FSU – 6.7
4) NC State – 7
5) Wake Forest – 8.3
6) Maryland – 8.4

Coastal

1) Miami – 4.1
2) UNC – 4.4
3) VT – 5.1
4) GT – 5.8
5) Duke – 7.9
6) Virginia – 8.8

So I open the floor to the ACC fans – how would you rank the ACC going into the season?
